However, since aluminum forms an oxidation layer rapidly on exposure to air, getting paint to stick can be a problem. Often this is overcome by using a self etching primer.
If the engine is air cooled then a layer of paint can directly affect the operating temperature of the parts involved, but so does layers of corrosion and grime. If liquid cooled, there is plenty of extra cooling system capacity to handle any loss of heat rejection on the outside of the cooling jackets. So this is a non issue in the real world.

|barnym17||Actually that is no myth it is the result of a study on heat rejection by alcoa in the 60's.Flat black coatings reject or emit far more heat than a plain aluminum surface.|

as the "myth" goes painting it a flat black will expel the heat more effectively than any other color, but wouldn't it absorb the heat from the headers too?
go ahead and paint it, no problems on this end

Not likely..any overheating and you have other issues besides the paint..

|barnym17||Clear coat is just paint without pigment.Paint the color you want and don't worry about it.If painting it causes overheating you have far bigger problems to worry about.|

Painting Engine question
Will painting an engine contribute to overheating? I have a ford 4.6 alum.block and would like to paint it. I was told that I would be better off just cleaning it and hi-temp clear coat. Any thoughts out there?
