Silly question is the socket you are using, a double wire or single wire?

If it's a double..... hook a jumper from a 12v source to the brake light pole/wire/side of the light socket - it should light, trace the brake light wire back towards the brake light switch, to the next connection , jump that - it should light etc..... until you get to the brake light switch etc..... If it lights at both sides the switch with a jumper..... are you getting 12v before the switch?
