No VIN numbers and need advice

Car has been setting since 1956 and sure it hasn't been used in any illegal activity. VIN tag is gone and don't have title. Body cowl tag is intact. Do have bill of sale with signature. The car is in good shape and I want to street rod it. Can anyone give me some advice on what to do?
It's 41 Chevy. Are there any other places a ID number would be located. And can anyone help with getting me a title for the car? Thanks, TT66

If you have the body tag you have all the information that is on the serial number plate. Check this site out again and you will see that the body tag contains the same info as the serial number plate.

I found where the serial tag goes on the floorboard passenger side but the tag is missing. Is there any other place it could be stamped possibly? I was able to find out the infomation of the car by the body tag and the website homebrew but no serial number.

Some states have an inspection process that allows a new title to be issued..You can do some checking with Indiana DMV and find out..usually they will want some proof of purchase or they can issue an abandoned car title..It is similar in nature to the process we go thru when we pick up abandoned cars from the side of the road..Aot depends on your jurisdiction as to how friendly or helpful they may be..

VIN on 41

I'm doing a frame off restoration and I haven't found the VIN in any other place. The plate on mine was barely readable. Luckily my nephew is in law enforcement and was able to verify the number.

The car was from out of state and California is not exactly user freindly.
They wanted me to bring the car in for verification (It was a basket case so that was problematical.) or any sworn peace officer could verify. Worked out, but if I ever try to sell it ....who knows what will happen.

No VIN numbers and need advice

To make up your serial number take the information from your body tag and place it in this order.
First digit - Assembly plant
Next - year
Next- model series
Next - month (unknown from body tag)
Next - Sequence Number

Not knowing the month should not be a problem as the sequence number is the actual serial number of the car as it was produced that year. The other numbers and letters are to confirm what the body style is.

Print the page from the website and take it with you. With this info and all the other documentation you have I don't think you should not have any trouble getting a title. Explain all of this to your worker and hopefully they will understand.

You may be able to have them issue a new tag for it, the highway patroll does this in our neck of the woods. Dan

VIN on '41

The General Section of the shop manual shows where all the numbers are loxated and what they mean.

I bought a hop manual online, but it had pages missing so I went to the Web Site and printed out what I needed and it helped alot when I put hte Mstng II front end on.

If the production seq. number located on the body tag is the serial number of the car, does anyone know if those numbers are part of the original vin tag numbers located below the passenger seat? If so I may have this nailed down. If not, well.........

Well.......I thought it might be that way. I know according to the body tag mine was manufacured in Janesville, Wisconsin because of the J which would be 21 on the vin tag. My vin should start 21AGxx-xxxx. That's about as far as I have gotten. Back to the grind stone.

Ok,
Today I had a police officer come over and do a VIN check on my 41 chevy. I showed him all the documents I had, bill of sale, body tag info, etc.. I showed him where the VIN was supposed to be and told him it's lost. No VIN tag, no problem, he made a note the tag was missing on the inspection form and he says the BMV will issue me a new VIN number. So tommorrow I plan to go to the BMV with my bill of sale, police inspection report, and a 5 x 7 glossy print of my car and hopefully we get a title! The police officer was a car nut too. We talked about cars for a while which was cool. Hopefully the girls down at the BMV will be cool too.
