noisy starter

I am having problems with my chevy 350/350 starters, I have installed two both are grinding. The casting on the first starter broke off so now I got this big inspection window. I used the paper clip trick to space the starter gear, but found that the space between the starter gear and flex plate when engaged is huge and no amount of shimming will take up the space. The flex plate looks good not bent, or chewed up.

When ever I buy a starter from summit there is only one style for the 350.

Any Ideas?

Doc here,

Order a SET of NEW 350 Starter bolts from GM, If you look, those are knurled..after so many changes, they no longer fit..and give the starter "Wiggle" room..

Also, If not using it, get a rear brace for the starter..

The open inspection hole will contribute to the noise level.
