I am currently assembling a 327 SBC and discovered that the snout on the crank is not threaded and appears to have been machined that way. This has got me stumped as to how I can install a harmonic balancer so that it will be secure without a bolt and washer. Is it possible to safely press it on and will it remain secure? Or does it need to be drilled and tapped? Has anyone ran across this situation and successfully remedied it?
Just drill it and tap it,the same size as a 350 cranksnout, I see our crankshaft grinder do it all the time.
He uses a 1/2" drillmotor and has someone watch and tell him if he is drilling crooked...
283/early 327's had press on balancers....another GM better idea
They are just press on on that engine, however as all ready suggested, I would drill and tap it and put a bolt and washer on it. If you are afraid to tackle that yourself, just get a machine shop to do it for you.
Funny... none the less that little flying balancer engine is still the most widely used power plant for performance use and every day...
BTW the engineers never intended for a SBC to spin or produce near the HP that people got out of them... Also we change things on any engine to make them survive the abuse we do to them... :thumbup:
