noobie-wanna learn about engines, need books

I'm lookin to buy some books on engines. Do you know of some good books on building engines for cheap? I know the basics of how an engine works but not how to modify it for power&durability. I was also wondering if you could give me tips on the most common engines and the cheapest ways to build horsepower. I'm hoping to make around 400hp at flywheel. I'm sure you've dealt with these questions before but I can't seem to find the answers with the search. Thanks in advance.

random question: how hard is it to mate engines with transmissions they were not designed for?

books

check our local book store such as Barnes and Nobel ,,they have all kinds of how to books from making horsepower to interchangeable parts from one engine to another, especially Chevrolet. or your local library has books on these topics.. do a search for engine to transmission adapters. either engine adapters or transmission adapters.
