OBD11 memory?

I took the wifes 96 Jimmy over to Autozone yesterday to have them scan it for codes. The mil had been on for about 3 days but had just gone out(40 ign cycles?) They wouldn't bother to scan it because the light was not lit, said the code would not be in the memory. If I recall correctly, the pre OBD11 cars would store codes for 30 restarts whether the light was on or not. Was I getting the runaround or are there no codes in the memory if the light is not lit??????

Cool

If the PCM does not see the problem again that set the hard code (which will turn on the MIL)...... the MIL will go out in a certain number of ignition key cycles.

the code is still there in the code history, at least it should be.

there probably some 'ready codes' too.... these are situations where the PCM sees a problem , but not long enough to set a hard code.

the problem

the problem is in the very first sentance where it says you took it to autozone. I believe they do check for free but if you are at there mercy i guess you may be at there mewrcy for a free scan but he already proved he doesn't know ehat he was talking bout cause it should still be stored in history. but then again he prolly only knows how to do the free scan not any diagnosing.

Thanks guys. I emailed a complaint to AZ's hdqtrs and they said that the jerks at AZ were correct. Time to buy a scanner for myself.(And avoid AZ altogether!)

Unless the low end ( read as cheap) scanners have changed in the past couple of years , they do not scan very deep into the system

Many do not read ABS either.

Try taking your Jimmy to a real garage. They will scan it.
