oil leak 4.8l ford

I was hoping to get some advise on an oil leak. My '67 was wrecked 3 weeks ago and my father in law loaned me his '92 mercury grand marquis. It has an oil leak that needs to be repaired. The leak appears to be where the oil filter adapter/oil press sensor bolts on to the block. There also appears to be another piece of steel sandwiched in there, somewhat like the fuel pump on a SBC(sorry, I'm a chevy guy, thats all I know). It is very cramped in there and I cannot see all the details until I actually pull the filter and unbolt the adapter, so I would like to have anything I need handy.
Is this adapter difficult to get off? Are there gaskets or O-rings or should I use silicone to reseal the part. Also is anyone familiar with common failures of this part (does it normaly crack/warp/break etc...)?
Thanks for the help, Andy

I think that Ford uses a "cooler" in between the filter and the block and that could be a likely place for a leak. There are replaceable seals/gaskets in the system.

The adaptor plate under the filter is a real leaker on fords. It gets distorted and leaks, ford sells thousands of em, guess its your turn.
