Oil out the crank snout on SBC...

OK, here's something I've not seen before. I was pulling stuff off my motor in preparation for painting the block (motor is out of the car). When I pulled the 1V pulley off the crank hub (this is a blower motor), there was a little puddle of motor oil in the bottom of the of the back of the pulley as well as the bottom of the inner diameter of the crank hub (where the snout bolt goes). There are no sling tracks on the back of the pulley (polished aluminum). The motor only has about 400 miles on it since being built. Everything in it is new except the block. The only way the oil could have gotten in there is through the key-way. It was a tiny bit of oil, less than a teaspoon. Should I be concerned?

I always put a dab of RTV in the groove for the key before installing the damper, just to prevent that from happening.

(slaps forehead...) Duh! I put RTV in every known potential leak source when assembling the motor... except the keyway. Only place that leaks?... the keyway!! Well, gotta pull the crank hub off anyway to get the timing cover off (to re-polish), so I'll seal 'er up when re-assembling. Thanks for the tip, boogie-man!

Be sure to clean(degrease)the groove and crank snout before hand so the RTV can seal properly.
