well i check the oil pressure on my 58 235 chevy and cold it was 40 psi and hot it about 5 psi so that might explain why the lifters are the way they are ,so i might not need lifters ,and that might explain the knock ??so i guess i need to change the oil pump first and see ,

what oil weight oil and is it a mineral oil?

several things can cause low oil pressure,like worn bearings.If you go to the trouble of dropping the pan,consider popping a cap and checking the bearings for wear and discolouration.You can use 50w mineral oil.Also check your oil pressure with a different oil pressure guage if you can borrow one.
Are there any lifter noises at idle when the engine is hot? I assume you change oil regularly?let us all know how you make out,thanks.

well only had the car about a month ,, i drove the car today and the lifter noise wasnt bad ,i almost have the oil pan off now i took a brake ,i dont know what kind of oil was in the car when i got it ,, could the pump be bad even though i have 40 when cold and 5 hot ? ohh well i'll see when i get the pan off
