oil pressure sending unit?

1979 MONTE CARLO 350 SHORT BLOCK ....i am having a problem with and oil leak i was told it was a rear main seal that went bad but after i put oil in the motor and started it myself i seen that the oil was not coming from the bottom of the trans where i think a rear main seal leak would come out from but its coming from above the trans around by the back of the engine. the oil does not come out until you start the car. i was told that the oil pressure sending unit is back there behind the distributor and that would pour oil out as soon as you start the engine if it was that. The engine drops out about a quart of oil when you start it. So far i have only had time to see that the oil is coming from back there somewhere and i havent checked out the oil sending unit yet im just woundering if anyone thinks that the oil pressure sending unit could be the problem or if the rear main seal leak could come from the top of the trans???

An oil leak at the oil pressure sending unit is quite common. In my years as a dealership mechanic I have seen quite a few rear main seals replaced when the real cause was the sending unit. They are cheap and easily replaced. That is the first thing I would try. You need a special socket though.

yes a buddy of mine is going to let me borrow the special socket and i just looked at the oil pressure sending unit like 20mins ago and there is oil on top of the intake manifold by the distributor and i dont think a rear main seal leak would get oil all the way up there thanks alot for your help
