oil pressure / water temp sending unit

hi guys,

i'm just swapping an sbc. the old one had the hole for the temperatur sending unit in the heads, and the hole for the oil pressure sending unit just above the oil filter.
the new one hasn't got those holes.
i did a little search on that board, one result said, that i can 'forget' the hole in the heads - but what about the oil pressure (and of course the water temp)?
and what are those units for?

thanks a lot

You can take your oil pressure from the oil galley plug next to the distrib mounting area. The water temp can be taken from the water crossover at the front of the intake manifold.

Use the correct senders for the type guage or "Idiot" light system your vehicle has.

Exactly what Bob just said. I would rather have my temp coming from the intake as opposed to the head because it is centrally located by the thermostat. While both heads may run at about the same temp. if you get a hot spot on one it could give you a false reading for overall temp. I never use the lower oil port for gauge, just for the light if your car uses one, take your pressure reading by the distributor. Not saying that is the best place, just that if you pick up a piece of road debris you will not break a line down low and loose oil.
