Oil Pump pick up clearance

What is the rule of thumb clearance between the oil pump pick up screen and bottom of the oil pan? Street car and occasional drag racing.

3/8" is what I have always used. A little more or less is OK.

There's a video by Melling that explains how to measure for it and adjust the angle of the pick up to obtain the correct clearance.

Note that the measurement is taken NOT from the very bottom of the OEM-type screen assembly- but from the ledge closest to the screen itself! This is important and hard to explain w/o diagrams or photos/video.

Thanks , I have seen the video and read others input on the issue and was still confused on the clearence. 3/8 from the middle of the pump or 3/8 from the tip?

It should be fairly close to the same from the front to the rear of the pick up screen assembly unless you have the pick up screen tipped quite a bit. If you have to tip it so much that you're seeing a >/= 3/16-1/4 inch change front to rear for example, the pan needs to be clearanced so the PU can be positioned level or a shorter pick up used. Clearancing the pan is a fairly common occurrence when using a HV pump- which in most cases really isn't needed in the first place.
