oil pumps

i been reading posts on here and i seen alot of different opinions on oil pumps,im building a well built 383 , i ordered a high volume oil pump but now im not so sure i should go with a high volume or a standard volume??????
any opinions????????????????

how much hp does it actually steal?

Stock oil pumps work fine 95% of the time. If you plan to spin it above 6000 on a regular basis I'd suggest installing a high pressure relief valve spring in the pump.

A Melling M55A pump is all you need.

From what I've heard a high volume pump in a standard depth pan will suck it dry

Canadian Charlie,

not true as long as you keep the oil level at full....

but "almost" true cause if you are one qt or more low.....you will see the oil press guage needle "bounce" indicating the pump is sucking a little air....time to add more

It's not really about the hp you might be using turning a hv/hp pump.

It's more about the additional load on the cam, oil pump shaft, dist gear.

Bearing clearances will also be a factor.

Don't use more pressure/volume than you need. The more oil that is bypassed the greater the chance for aeration. That's bad for bearings and lifters.
