Old GM steering to new style pump

While pulling the fittings out of my 1982 s10 steering box I have found the low pressure line was 18mm with a o-ring and the high pressure was 11/16 with just a flare.

From what I've read this should not be the case. I have never had the lines off and they have also never leaked.

The only reason I am messing with them is the new engine i'm installing right now has a nice pulley set-up and I would like to use it. Was planning on running -6an lines or something equivalent to the newer style pump.

Any ideas why this box was like this? On the new style pumps the outlet is high pressure on the pump right?
