Old Radio Modernizing?

Has anyone out there wired up their radio to be nothing but a controller?

Here's what I'm thinking.

Mini jack in the glovebox(?) or center console or whatever. this would go to RCA cables and the input on a 4 channel amp.

Obviously the amp would then be wired to the speakers.

Is there anyway to wire up the otiginal radio so it controls the power/volume?

I'm sure there is....I just haven't pulled my radio to see what's behind it. Anyone done this or considered the "cons" of it?

Most old radios had only speaker outputs and analog tuners.
It may be possible to tap the electronics at the pre-amp stage and create a output at the correct impedance and level for the power amp to receive. You should get the schematics for the specific radio you have.
A radio repair shop may be able to do this.
Also do some research for products designed for what you looking for.
The quality of the sound will only be as good as old radio can deliver.
Check out this product.

If all you care about is power on/off and the volume rheostat, yeah, this is easy. Open the radio case, disconnect the wires to the power/volume switch, wire to your amp. Of course, you need to ensure that the amp has the ability to have the volume controlled from an outside rheostat. Of course the rest of the radio (tuner, preamp, etc) would be non-functional.

Now, if you want to put modern guts in an old radio, there are many vendors who do that. They use the stock tuner with new electronics and RCA jack outputs to go to a remote amp.
