Old SW tach wiring./compatability with HEI

I've got an OLD Stewart-Warner "Stage I" tach. that I'd like to use, and no wiring diagram so I need a question answered. I tried previously to have it hooked up to my HEI (from Tach terminal) and seem to recall it would only read to 2000 rpm or so. Wiring from case is as follows: 1-red={Signal/Input I believe},and 1 each of black and green that are twisted together. Green changes to white on front side of circuit board and would appear to be activation for field.) Does this sound right? Does anyone know if these older models of SW required any "black-box" (like the old Sun tach.'s) to work correctly or are they direct-wired compatible with HEI?-Thanks,Jim

All the SW tachs I'v seen the red is power black is ground and GREEN is your signal.

Don't know about the compatibility but I do know the old dwell meters wont work on a HEI without a filter.
