Olds 3.4 dual cam engine

Hi All

If this was older I could fix it ... I bought a 95 Cutlass Supreme Convertible for my daughter to use here on Cape Cod for the summer... it lived in Fla most of its life and then in RI for a year. I bought it last year in November and drove it on a few local trips and an occasional longer one. Last January on a nice dry day I took it about a hundred miles from home ..as always it was running fine... had trouble accelerating from stop signs and traffic lights on my way home. Feathered the throttle and I could get it moving again. Stopped a few places on the way back and it got progressively worse. I finally made it home, put it in the garage and it never started again. Only 85000 original miles...

So.... I tried plugs, wires, tested the sensor outputs and nothing. Did a compression check and one cylinder was down. Dropped the engine. had a head rebuilt, put it all back together and it started and idled smooth as can be... BUT... still wouldnt take the gas under load.... changed the cam sensor, checked the injectors. took off the intake manifold again to check the rear three injectors....all looks good.... IAC appears to have all the right voltages etc..changed the ECU just to make sure. No obvious vacuumn leak.

I got it running today and the first few miles it again ran perfect..than started acting up again.. making me think heat related....

Is there anything obvious I have missed ? Do these symptoms sound familiar for this particular motor..anyone ever worked on one of these pigs.... Thanks- Mike B

I think a fuel pressure test is warranted at this point.
Put a gauge on and tie it to a windshield wiper. Then watch what it does as you drive, see if it falls off when the symptoms occur.
The only other thing that comes to mind is a dirty MAF.

Coolant temp sensor?
manifold air temp sensor?

You need to get a real scan tool (not just a code reader) and see what the sensor readouts are when the condition occurs.

Olds

Took it up to a freinds shop...so much for my theory, it ran like crap even from cold today...

I have had an older Snap On scan tool on it... going to use his Modis and see if we get a better result.... not throwing any codes so we will have to look at data stream....

Olds 3.4

So..... lesson learned.... always check the basics..... one of the ignition coils had a poor ground and was intermittent.. never showed up until I took them all off, swapped a known good coil in .......second coil swap did the trick... guess I will order up three new ones ... it is running GREAT, finally !!!!!
