olds 442 stands for.....???

OK, so all my short life, i've heard that 442 stood for 4- four barrel carb, 4- speed trans, 2- dual exhaust.... well, this past weekend i think it was, on speed channel, they did a show on the oldsmobile. They showed a vintage commercial, in the commercial, the announcer states, "Olds 442- 400 cubic inches, 4 barrel carburation, 2 true dual exhausts".... wth olds guys?
who knew?

The first year was 4 speed only, then when Olds upped the capacity to 400ci and made the auto an option they changed the meaning of the designation.
If my memory is correct, a 1977 442 (probably the best looking Nascar Olds ever) could be ordered with a 260 v8 and 5 spd - yuk.
I know little of Oldsmobiles history but I'm pretty sure '64 was the first 442 with 340 cubes, followed by the 400 in 65. Remember GM wouldn't allow over 400 cubes in intermediates until 1970. Copo or outside vendors like HURST/OLDS were exceptions.

Yeah that's an error on their part. Should have been obvious enough to them that it was incorrect.... given that there are 442 cars with fewer than 400 CID.

I think they changed the designation again with some of the front wheel drive 442's as well, found this on 442.com. http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/of442.htm#442%20Meaning(s)

That's a good question. I was reading in the new Car Craft that Ford is coming out with some new minivan and calling it a Fairlane.

Before 1968 - 4 spd., 4bbl., dual exhaust.

1968 and after - 400, 4bbl., dual exhaust.

I have a 1969 442 in my shop now. It has a 400 and an auto.

I thought it was:

4 stuck valves
4 flat tires
2 men pushing

and a dead partridge in a pear tree.

re: olds 442 stands for.....???

From someone who was there at the time and cared enough to remember -- when first introduced, it was FOUR barrel, FOUR speed, and TWO exhausts. Whatever convoluted marketing stuff they came up with later, the factory reps explained over and over at the start -- it was 4 barrels, 4 speed, 2 exhausts.
