olds 455 timing ?

I bought an olds 455 engine from a friend and had it bored 30 over ; put in better pistons ; a mid range cam ; an edelbrock performer intake with a 770 street avenger carb. The engine block numbers are 396021F with G heads. I've been told it's a 1971 or 1972 engine. I looked up the timing settings , but some say 8 degrees ; some say 10 degrees. I also put an electronic distributor in. In some instances, it seems to ping. I wouldn't think an electronic distributor could ping. Does anyone know what I should time this engine at?

Early hi compression 455, 12 deg. initial advance. 36 deg. total advance by 3000.

Advance the timing as much as possible at idle till it pings, or starts missing than back the timing off a bit.
