I believe the Olds heads are not numbered, but they're lettered. I have a few Olds motors from running circle track. Check these guys out for answers to Olds questions, I'm sure these are the guys who helped me out. Could be wrong though.

The engine casting number will be located on a large flat area just above the water pump. The heads are either number or lettered in large digits in the top corner, very obvious from just taking a quick glance at them. Number designate small-block, letters for big blocks. Post what you find and I'll help you out.

What you have there is a 1985-86 307. Hope you didn't pay much (if anything) for it.

You believe incorrectly. Besides the casting ID letter (big block heads) or number (small block heads) next to the first spark plug, there is also a six digit casting number above the center two exhaust ports. This is important because people have been taking common "E" code heads, grinding off the bottom of the "E", and trying to sell them as the rare and very expensive "F" heads used on the 1970 W-30. Fortunately the casting number above the exhaust ports is different and not easily changed.

Olds problems

Go to Oldsmobile FAQ and they can tell you a lot I've been running Olds for a number of years The heads have had letters-numbers-and both together depending on years the main ones to stay away from for performance are 73-76 and any thing in a 307 Olds newer than 84.1985 and up 307 junky enginesdont even fool with them doesn't matter what it came from junky.Lefty
