While we're all here, has anybody seen my binoculars? I swear they were here just the other day...

You're right- if the engine is in the car, the frame darned sure could have eaten it! Even laying down inside the wheel, inner side. I'm thinking the engine's on a stand, he mentioned pulling the pan like it wasn't anything special. But he didn't say one way or the other, so it might be in the car already.

Engine is on the stand, thats how I can spin it over and turn the crank with it sideways and upside down. I did the work out in my driveway that day, I'm sure I had them all, I just can't for the life of me figure out what the hell I did. I can't sleep at night, I actually got out of bed twice last night to go check 2 places I know I already checked.... I'm pretty sure it's not in the motor, I don;t see how it can possibly fit anywhere down in the crank or cam area without it moving and me hearing it or the engine locking up. I can see pretty much the entire intake runner and valves, and I've stuck a magnet into the water jackets as far as I can and I really don't see how it could get down on there anyway. I just so damn scared to button it up without knowing where it is...

good luck with that... there's tons of places it could get lodged in an engine. If it was me I'd let it sit a few days and see if it turns up (under the bench or something) and if not I'd start tearing down the engine.

Of course, you'll find that you set it on the top shelf of your fridge or something after you have it 2/3 disassembled...

LOL... I helped a friend with an engine swap in his lemans, and at one point dropped a motor mount nut or bolt and it went in the k-member, he said something like "oh no. that always happens..."

I went fishing with a magnet on the end of a piece of wire and fished out 7 nuts/bolts, I didn't figure he was just leaving them in there...

I just talked to my machine shop who built the shortblock. He said that since the intake and oil pan are off, and the timing cover has been removed to check behind it that he doesn't think it's in there. It is one of those polylock nuts so it's pretty big and heavy and if it were down in the crank area somewhere it would either lock up the motor or come loose when the motor was turned on the engine stand which I kinda agree with. I've turned this motor over on the engine stand probably 20+ times and rotated it over a hundred and there is no sign of it anywhere. I think I'm gonna try my luck and finish assembling it, and then see where it turns up....

What about- fell from pants pocket (you did check your pockets? Yeah, I know- a dozen times ) into the front seat of your DD where it went down between the seat and seat back...

That's it for me. This is making me want to go look in MY shop for it!!

I was thinking the same thing Cobalt... Strange what makes a good thread... What will we do if it's never found at all?
Do we just reassemble the engine and drive it, cringing forever?

You look in all the exhaust ports Nova?

Man. I dunno. If it's not found, that first start up would be a nail biter! I know the OP's looked everywhere in the engine that's possible, but just the same...
