one wire alternator problem

this alternator has worked fine for about 4 years until recently. one min it is charging and the next its not. any ideas what to look for before i buy a new one?

Check your grounds. Battery to body, battery to engine, and ground strap from engine to firewall.

the screw that the wire from the brushes bolt to was backed out. maybe 2 threads holding it in.

well i started it up and it was charging. didnt drive it.

If the brush makes intermtant contact it could very well be your problem. cross yer fingers, and hope you got it. If that's the case, it sounds like you just saved the money for a nice date out on the town.
