I plan on spraying my car in the spring after I finish prepping it. I'm going to rent a spray booth by the hour. The car is currently white and the new paint will be a brighter white. My question is do I need to bother with a two stage paint, don't most companys make a quality single stage paint? And as far as I know a single stage can be color sanded and buffed, right?

Do you need to bother with a 2 stage paint? That's up to you! It depends on what you want as a finished product. BC/CC will last longer. It is also easier to spray if you are new to painting, as mistakes can be repaired as you go along. If you get a run in the base, you fix it before clear. After the base is the way you want it, you shoot the clear. If there is a problem with the clear, you can fix that, and shoot more clear on it.
My understanding is that you can sand and buff single stage if it is not a metalic color. Since I use very little single stage, I can't say that for sure, but that is my belief. Aaron |
Aaron,
You need to try some of the SPI white single stage.it is pure white and it buffs out just beatiful..I have found with single stage if one gets a flaw it is a simple matter to sand out the flaw and shoot a touchup..good stuff as far as I am concerned..BC/CC I think is best when a guy is doing candies and or pearls and flake..or wants that real custom color.. Sam.... I have used the SPI Black SS, but never had to sand and buff anything that I applied it on. Not that I am that good, just that I used it on a roll cage, engine compartment, and suspension parts. I have not tried the whites yet. I try to not paint anything white. :D

Sanding and buffing work better on clear coat, IMHO. I only use SS when any buffing will be very light.

I feel that the basecoat clearcoat is SOOOOOO much easier. It is kinda like baseball compared to basket ball. You can take your time and lay it on. Brian |
