Ordering From Summit Shiping To Canada

I would like to get a new carb and from what I have seen summit is the best price around. It's edelbrock carb that is made in the US so it should be duty free thanks to NAFTA. But is there any other charges other than gst and PST? Summit told me over the phone that duty could be from 30% to %50. And the could not say what duty was for sure.

Any body have any experience ordering or could pass on some tips.

Thanks
John

I'd call UPS, 1-800-pickups. I've heard horror stories about "fees" added once an item gets across the border.

NAFTA ... that's a joke. The only reason it was signed was so that the huge Yankee corporation could get Mexican labor, cheap.

Near as I can tell there is nothing in it for Canucks. The "Mad Cow Crisis" and the "Softwood Lumber" BS is further proof of that.

As far as the "fees" things goes ... yes, they're outrageous. I bought some 781 BBC cylinder heads (reconditioned and assembled, including approx $100 freight) for $656.00 out of Batavia, OH. The currency exchange rate was a lille higher than it was now, so I think it worked out to be $800.00 CDN or so. Then UPS calls and asks if I have a customs broker, or would they like me to have them look after it for another $100.00? The seller sent me an e-mail saying that it cost him "quite a bit more" than he was quoted originally, and asked if I would re-imburse him as well. Voila ... $1000.00 for a set of heads that I could have bought at a swap meet (bare castings) for $250 CDN.

Ouch! I thought of having my name changed to "Ben Dover"

Generally, unless its something that you can't get here, it's best to buy it here. Some of those extra charges are true.......An Edelbrock is easy to find this side of the border.

One more thing ...

I was told that if I had advised the seller to label the customs declaration as "Agricultural Parts", I could have avoided paying duty.

True or not? I don't know. I just decided to take my licks, and not to be so naive and foolish next time.

Best Buy Performance in Calgary sells some stuff for a little less (CDN) than Summit does (USD!) Tell them you want wholesale price because you work for a garage / dealership / auto parts store.

66gmc do you have any contact information for Best Buy Performance like a website or telephone #. I'm sure that they will ship to me in Regina. That is the problem here we only have one performance shop in town so they just got you.

And it is true that edelbrock should be easy to find, but if I would have ordered it from summit or got it locally there would have been 150 $ difference with the exchange and a stamped steel air cleaner locally was $48 and summit was $15 just a little bit of a difference

Thanks
John

Another question to ask. Is there any Canadian based mail order stores? And if there is could you point me in that direction?

Thanks

John

I know I bought a door shave kit out of the states and it cost almost double the USD price by the time it got here. As a rule of thumb, I now add about 80% to the posted price. UPS is a killer on the brokerage. The lady at the UPS affiliate where I picked it up said UPS doesn't have their own broker, so they farm it out. Cost on a $103.00 item was $39.00 brokerage, $5.00 handling, plus the cost of delivery. I called UPS to complain at the womans suggestion, but it didn't do any good.

Go to Canadian Tire. Go to the parts counter, they can order you Edelbrock parts for the cheapest price, cheaper than having it shipped here. If you have a friend in the States at the border just have it shipped to him and then go and pick it up.
