What was the original color for the auto trans in a 68 Pontiac
Tempest? Was it painted or bare metal? Does anyone know for sure?

No auto manufacturers painted their aluminum transmissions.Paint tends to make a transmission[or any aluminum product] operate at a bit warmer level,as it hinders the aluminum's natural ability to cool. Same theory applies to radiators, heads, external coolers, etc. You can paint it,lots of people do,it's a preference thing.

Think about it. WHY would a manufacturer spend the money to paint something that will never be seen and that does not have a corrosion issue?
They can't sell it for more money. No buyer is going to crawl under the car to look at the paint job before buying a car. So, it would not be a selling point.

Chevrolet never bothered to paint the runners under my front seats either.
