Post output shaft to slip yoke

How much slip yoke surface should be visible after it's engaged with the output shaft? I read somewhere that there should be approx 3/4" visible. I think what they were getting at is that any less than that and your driveshaft is too long, which is bad. What about when you can see more than 3/4"? Is that okay?

TIA,

Bill

Best way to check is to move the rear axle through it's entire range and see if the shaft yoke bottoms in the trans. This can be hard to do if you have leaf springs. As long as you have the splines engaged for at least one shaft diameter I would say that is enough to prevent stripping out the splines. It is dangerous if there is not enough clearance because you will trash the trans and drive shaft if it bottom under load and suspension compression.
