The 700r4 is a good choice. Have one in my 70 Chevelle ( its a 1987 ). I have a B&M Hole shot 2000 converter and the whole thing seems to work pretty well. I even raced the car for a couple of years with no problems. When installing it I think you have to add a converter lockup switch. B&M should be able to supply that. Good luck on the project.
Thanks Joe. I think I will get my neighbor (he owns a trans shop) to start looking for a core we can build. Then a Kit from Performance Auto. should do the trick.
