Paint - Centari

Need some assistance. Need to match a 1969 GM Centari paint - we cannot use Centari. Color: 99Chat. Mauve (5046A, Alt. 1) Could some tell me how to cross this to Dupont Chromapremier?

Dupont says they can't help.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I just talked to my DuPont supplier on Friday about this very subject. While Centari was a great SS paint in the '80s, it is being slowly phased out for other products. This is a website that "promises" that they can supply paints back to the early 1900's and possibly can help. I don't know much about them but is worth a look:

The website is a bit confusing but is pretty good once you get the hang of it.

Paint-Centari

Ladyann, To the best of my knowlege GM was still acrylic laquer across the line if I'am wrong I'd like to know what divisions were using Centari. Thanks Pete

What type of a repair are you doing? I'd guess you are trying to do a repair on a 69 Chev that was repainted in Centari? One Dupont option would be to have the color matched in Chroma-one single stage urethane, another option would be to match the color in basecoat Nason, or Chroma Premier, or Chromabase do a blend and clear over the exhisting Centari-this may require blending the paint into an adjacent panel. Any knowledgable paint supplier should be able to set you up with a match that's close enough for a blend-this gets done all the time.

Dave is right about tcpglobal website. I look at it pretty regular. Once you get the hang of it, you will use it also. John

hi, kirker has some great urephane paints out there .COLORS ARE SUPER. centari is one of my favorites loved the smell s. except greens alway different. good luck !!!!!!

Which continues to amaze me as to why people let that happen - especially if those car owners do a regular shop visit to kick azzze!!!

I have a co-worker who has a 64 Impala in a mechanical shop who has had it four or five years, maybe six I forget.

He gave him the body on a cart, the frame fully powder coated with all the suspension, inner fenders, rad support, the whole deal. The motor to rebuild, and $4500 to start. Not a SINGLE bolt has been turned, NOTHING.

This POS has that body over on the side BEHIND a couple other cars and PILES of shelves and boxes and what have you. The frame is up on a shelf 15 feet off the ground. He has never touched a nut or bolt!

He also had another co-workers 51 Chevy pickup in there for about a year for an engine and mustang II swap. I have bought the beautiful dropped axle off the owner of the truck. It is buried in the shop under the 64 Impala body, along with the 55 pass car rear end that I want and the 235 too. I have went by there day after day for weeks, then to once a week for months, I have been going over there to check to see if he cleaned out the mess since JANUARY! It's coming on a friggin YEAR and the stuff is still trapped back there. And believe me, don't go thinking I could get that axle out somehow under the body or car next to it or something, we are talking BURIED there is NO WAY to get it out without moving everything in front of it!

Oh yes poor dumb bastard, what kind of money can you be making when there are only two stalls left in the shop that aren't storing something? This is about a five thousand square foot shop! He has TWO Stalls operable!

Why are these people allowing this to happen? I couldn't get away with it and neither should anybody else. Does he have employees? If not, he can't make decent money in a 5,000 sq ft shop by himself, the overhead would eat up anything he brings in, unless he just keeps getting deposits and doesn't do any work, but that doesn't last long.

I thought the days of stepping over a turbo 350 and a German Sheppard to get to the owner of a repair shop where over, I guess it's still alive and well.

It IS alive and well! And this guy is damn talented, he can do some good work but gets himself into trouble with this crap. Check this out, out side in the weather is a BEE-UUU-TEEE-FUL 65ish Chevy pickup. It's a two tone, with SUPER NICE paint on it. It has never been assembled, no chrome on it, no glass, no front sheetmetal put on it. I have no idea what the story is. But it has been at THREE different shops this guy has had. It has been stored outside of two of them that I know of. The paint is now failed and will have to be re-shot. And I am telling you, I can be a detail nut and this thing is very nicely done for a non-show car kinda rig, it is very nice. What in the living world would make someone look at something like this for years, 10-15 years I have seen this truck. I have no idea who owns it, but I don't care what the story is, if the owner owed him $10K I would still not have that truck there for this long, I would lean sale it, throw it away, I don't care what I did but it wouldn't be there outside my door every friggin day for years.

The co-worker of mine with the Impala was warned, by a number of people not to give him the car and money, and there it sits.
