Paint Gun Tip Size ?

I just got a new gravity feed hvlp gun. I tried to spray 2K primer and it came out in splatter. What tip sizes do you use for primer, base coat metalic and clear. Also what air pressure for each.
I'm new to the paint game. Thanks in advance.

For primer I use a 1.8. The tech sheets for the primer I use say 1.6-2.0 depending on weather I'm using it as a primer surfacer or a spray filler. For HVLP guns you usually want 10psi at the air cap when spraying primer.

For base coat I use a 1.4. You could use a 1.2-1.5. I like the Iwata LPH400. You want 8-10psi at the cap when spraying base coat.

For clear coat I use the same 1.4, with a different cap. You could use 1.3-1.5. when spraying clear you should have 10psi at the air cap.

My guess as to why your primer was splattering when you sprayed was not enough air pressure. If you can get someone who has sprayed before to show you how to set up your spray gun, it makes a world of difference.

What brand of spray gun are you using?

we are having the same problem. 2 posts down I posted the same thing. I am using a 1.5 tip on 2k primer and have the same issue plug I don't know where to get more tips. I put a regulator on the gun and had 10 psi going to the gun. What did you have? I'm going to move up from 20 to 45 and see what happens.

You want 10psi at the air cap, depending on the gun, thats more like 25-30 on the regulator. The handle of your spray gun may have stamped in it what the inlet pressure should be. If your inlet pressure is 10 psi your air pressure is WAY too low.

you are right. I have to reduce most 2k's because of heavy splatter...doesnt take much reducer to make a big difference. I use a 1.4 tip.
