Paint steps and tips

So im painting my truck its a 77 k10 i recked it some girl hit me and bent my frame. I couldnt get rid of my truck go so I bought a frame that was in great shape and planned on putting it back together, so since im gonna have everything off I figured might as well put in the time to paint it, problem is I've never painted or preped any car for paint I know little about what I want but not how to do it. I want to take it the bare metal epoxy it and use a basecoat the truck is gonna be blue or silver any tips would be helpful

Oh and another thing what should I paint first I'm bed lining under the bed and cab

Read a lot of the posts here. Watch videos on YouTube. Make sure your surface is very clean before you spray. Use a good wax remover. You can get a bottle from the auto paint supplier. One bottle goes a long way.

I used a direct to metal primer. Then 2 coats of base. And two coats of clear. Follow the instruction on the cans of paint. Get an activator that matches the temps you will be painting in. Dont rush! Let the coats flash/dry between coats! Usually about 15 to 30 mins. Depending on the temp in your booth/garage. A tip I saw was to touch an area of overspray to see how tacky your last coat is. You don't want to spray the next coat if the one that's on there is still wet.

Is the bed liner a spray on or roll on? Either way you will get overspray on it unless you tape it off. Not sure if you care? But if you do and it's a roll on maybe do the liner last? Especially if it's a roll on. Less chance of getting it on your new paint job. If its a spray on I'd personally do that first. Then paint my car. Maybe someone with more personal experience can chime in. Best of luck!

RESEARCH IT. Plenty of sites and videos and books detailing all the finer points of painting your car. Youre not going to get the knowledge you need in a few quick replies on this board.

Not trying to be rude, but there is a whole lot to this and you need to take the time to learn all about it before you dive in.

You asked for it.

Realise you are going to spend a minimum of 100 hours of hands-on work time + bodywork on this. That does not count smoke stops, coffee breaks or sucking suds with your buddies or cleaning up, its 100 hours of hands-on work and 100 hours of everything else in your life you are not doing.

It's dirty, messy work that smells bad, tastes worse and gets onto and into everything so figure on wearing painter's tyvek jump suits to throw away or get divorced over a washer/dryer combo.

Going down to metal would also mean pulling the windshield & backglass (they may break) and reaming out all of the seam sealer. Add another $500 for sealer, gun and sundries.

Sorry to rain on your parade but I have seen too many people start too many projects and thrown in the towel half-way thru because they did not realise how much work and time this takes.

Everything you say is 100% right. But if you have the desire and drive to do it it makes it all much easier. When I'm working on my car in the garage it's relaxing to me. I could come home after a long day at work. And still put in another 3 or 4 hours in the garage and not even think about of it.

So if you want it? Go for it! But listen to these guys. It's hard work but very rewarding. Plus you will save a ton of cash doing it yourself. And have the satisfaction knowing you did it yourself! Or you could just take it to One Day paint.

Well guys thx for the reply but I, was, aware of the time this by, all means is well worth it, I, wouldnt have, spent, money, on, basically a new truck if I didnt know, what I was getting into I really just needed a general idea of how it should be like sand to metal body, work then epoxy high primer, sand primer stuff like, that, ive done some resarch but ive have like 4 or 5 months until I start school
