Painted the Car: Prelim Pics

Wow im just about there on my project and want to thank each of you
that helped me along the way.

The car is a 84 Z28 and its the first car im sure of many now, that I will
paint. I really need to get the wife to spring for the booth !.

Anyway the Paint is a custom mix Yellow by valspar. Its SS urethane.
I have yet to wax it. Its just color sanded and buffed out.

Hope you like the few pics attached. I will add more in a day or so when I
apply the carbon Fibre stripes. I will see if I can scrounge a better camera for
additional pics as the one I have does not really show the car as your eye
would see it.

Thanks again guys ... Paul

Painted the Car: Prelim Pics

Congratulations on finishing the paint. Looking really nice. Shows what a little patience and preparation will do. Sure would have been nice to have seen the whole car in one of the pictures. What's next?

Hi Chris, sure can give you details.

Ok I used a finex FX300 1.8 for the primer. The primer was epoxy based.

http://www.autobodybrands.com/primers/5425_x2k.html

I really like this primer. Its around $18 to $20 inc Hardner per qrt. It sands
super easy.

Since the car is Yellow there is a minimum of 3 coats. Yellow can be difficult
to apply due to lack of good hiding in one or two coats. I like yellow, but it
has to be on a car that the color will suit.

I painted the car with a Devilbiss GFG-670 Plus gun. I also used a Devilbiss
SRI for the Jambs etc. I found both of these guns to be excellent. Using
a 1.4mm tip in the 670 put the SS paint down with little or no orange peel.
The trick on the SS Urethane paint is to reduce it enough so it flows out
pretty good. Getting the viscosity correct can be interesting to say the least.

I was tempted to go BC/CC on this but I wanted to build experience as SS
is pretty similar to Clear except clear has no color. I figured if I could lay
the SS good and gained experience with it I would have a better shot of
clear coating which I will do for my nest project. IMHO standard base coat
is way easier to lay down than SS but then you have to contend with the clear. I have seen clear coating go horribly wrong and it can be real frustrating when that happens. So now I have one under my belt I feel
I am in a good position to move forward.

Painting is really interesting and also Hair pulling. Doing it yourself is kind of cool. Its important though to have good breading equipment and goggles
to protect yourself.

For my next gig, I think im going to strongly consider a booth either home made or bought. This would make life so much easier.

Thanks ><
