Painters dilema

Hey gang,

Well I have a good one for ya. I recently tried to call my jobber that I usually get my BASF - RM paints from, and to my dismay. There phone number was disconnected. I still have to physically check and see if there still at there location, but if there not what can I do? I already laid down there epoxy primer EP569 as well as some of there high build primer DP25, on certain areas of the car. Now I know you usually aren't supposed to mix paint companies, but what am I supposed to do. I still have to seal the car before I can bc/cc it. I'm looking at PPG's Deltron or DuPont's Chroma base system. But don't know if I can go directly over them. Any suggestions? I'll try and call there respective local distributors in the morning but wanted to get your suggestion as well. Thanks...

If you cant get the paint you are after from the same manufacturer just get what ever else you are happy with, there will be no problems at all.

I use what I consider the best and the paint does NOT all come from the same company.

Yes just sand and go with another brand. You shouldn't use one brands primer and an others hardener. But you don't need to use the same brand all the way through. As far as the paint manufacturer covering any problems trust me no matter what it will be your fault and not covered.

SPI makes a great products you can top coat with..

The PPG or Dupont base will be fine.. You could also look into Pro SPray for a base and SPI Universal Clear Coat to finish it off..

Just some food for thought

I would think that by the time you get all this sorted out, you will be out of the recoat window for the primer on the car. At that point, it becomes an old finish, and you sand it for the requirements of whatever you are putting on top of it.

If you are worried, make a test panel.

So far, and I am not going to say this will work in every case, I have applied Dupont Centari single stage, with hardner, over PPG DPLF with DP 402 hardener.

cool, thanks guys. But I think I lucked out. I contacted BASF and they got me another distributors number, and they bought out my old RM paint dealer.. So hopefully I'll be able to continue on the RM paint trail

If you find a primer that's not compatible with other brands
of paint, let us know so we don't ever use it (LOL)
