Painting an engine!

Hey guys... my engine is already painted orange.... i did it in November when I put a 350 in my car.... but some has peeled off one of my valve covers and..... after consulting a friend's father who did his whole engine while it was in his truck..... he's restored a 72 Chevy Pickup and before that did a body-off with a 66 Nova..... anyway.... he uses primer on the engine before painting it.... I brought this up with my grandfather, who is 82 years old and has been a mechanic since he was 20.... He said that's rediculous and you should never use primer on an engine.... he said he's never heard of anybody ever doing that before.... and then went into stories about painting engines in the 30's and 40's....... lol..

So anyway... does anyone here use primer when they paint an engine?

No Primer

Nope, I dont use it either. POR-15 and Eastwood both make nice engine paint kits. The basics of them are a clean surface. Many cleaners leave a residue, so they provide cleaners that address that problem. Both of those kits allow for being applied with a small brush, which is included in the kit.

I have tanked motors after painting them with the POR product and it stayed right on there. Also, I believe that both products cure better once the block is heated up.

Been discussed several times on the board. Like Tom said, cleanliness is the key, no matter what you use. I normally powder coat my engines but those that I paint, I use etching primer, hi-build primer, & BC/CC urethane, just like a body. Holds up to heat great, grease, & gas & looks like a million.
