Painting over exisiting paint or clear

I want to paint over an existing finish. What is the best grit to sand the clear with before shooting the base? I won't need to spray any kind of adhesive promoter going this route will I? Thanks

All you need it to scuff it with a gray scuff pad that is how most guys prepare to "blend" on existing panels. And it is recommended by the paint manufacturers.

If you want to "sand" it, use 1200 and you will be fine.
