Painting a Pewter camaro quarter panel
 
hi guys i have a dent in my rear quarter on my 02 camaro z28. now i have the dent fixed and i have to blend it into the panel. my question is that the paint is highly metallic and there are a few different variances of the color. I'm using dupont chromabase with the matching clear. However I see that some companies also have a base blender to mix in to help out with metallic blends. so I'm wonder what your thoughts are on blending as I;ve never blended a panel before I usually just do seperate panels or pieces. here is the color for those wondering....

The main reason to use a blender is to cut down on the halo effect where you bend your color. All depends on how good you are at blending. I've never seen a need to use it but I've been blending colors for years. I even did it with the old aclyic enamels when they said you couldn't do it.

Have you got a part number on the blender. Most blenders are for blending clear coat. If your using chroma base stepping out your colour shouldn't be difficult. Blending the clear is where some people have issue

For best results prep the entire panel, if your doing the quarter, prep the entire quarter including 3/4 of the way up the sail panel (I use 1000 grit or even finer especially on my clear blend area in this case the sail panel). Get coverage on your repair area allowing for proper flash times. Once you have achieved hiding gently move your colour out in all directions of the repaired area (don't worry about coverage as transparency will give you the illusion of perfect colour match). Clear the entire quarter, blending your clear on the sail panel (this is where I use blender, which is basically a slow slow reducer). With practice you can get away without polishing your blend. Some people add blender to the clear coat only in your blend area, in your case the sail panel, some people use a 2 gun method, one gun with catalysed clear the other with straight blender, apply a coat of clear on the blend area followed with a mist coat of blender until your repair is invisible. Check your tech sheet to see what is recommended by the manufacturer for using the blender in your clear coat.

Where exactly is your dent on your quarter panel, if towards the front part of it you may need to blend into your door. As far as color blender ( I'm speaking from Ppg, Dbc500) our product I use after the panel has been prepped and spot sealed, I spray a medium wet coat over entire panel, This way the paint isnt landing on a dry panel and it helps to avoid the hallow effect and you dont have paint dust that you have to tac before clearing. Have your local paint store look up your varients for your pewter if its wa382e you will have quite a few of them, seems like course and prime are most popular matches.This product also works great when your color is a shade off, you can mix it with your paint to make it more translucent so you can layer it out more giving you a better color match when you look at it from a side cast (flop) Clear entire panel. good luck

Thanks guys, the part number for the dupont blender is 69301s but I have been looking into the ppg d500 for the color blender like paint dude said. The reason being is that there are so many different variances of pewter it seems to give the best chance of a good blend. Does the blender get mixed into the paint or is it layed on before the basecoat?

I'm planning on clearing the whole panel if that matters its not a big area any way. The dent is right on the bottom of the drivers side in the back behind the tire here the bumper meets the quarter. I'm thinking of returning the dupont and buying ppg base but its so freaking expensive lol. Does anyone know if the blender from ppg can be used with dupont chroma base?

Also just wondering if I get this done correctly will I still be able to notice fairly easily that the panel has been painted or will the blender make for a nice easy transition?

First of all the d500 is sprayed onto the panel after you prep it. I usually reduce it and go past the area that I am doing my colour blend. So to your question, it is not mixed in with the paint, it is put on prior to painting. (D500 IS Awesome for candy colours where you add a dye to it and go over a base coat). If you start with a product line stick with a product line, do not mix PPG with Dupont.

If you do it correctly you should not have a colour issue, however, the clear in your repaired area should be shinier than the rest of the car. This will change after time or you could polish the entire car and no one will know.

thanks ray I'm not doubting you at all but the dbc500 directions I keep finding say to apply it after the BC. Which to me doesnt make sense if I'm trying to blends the bc?

Your using ChromaBase so you should have a real good color match. I'm not good at blending either. In your situation I would paint the whole panel, masking it at the bumper line, tail light, along the trunk, around the windows and down the rear edge of the door. Jus sayin'.

Works good for me.

well the reason I want to flare it out is that pewter has around6 different variants in the system so I want to make sure that it will be off by as little as possible I fear th if I just shoot the whole panel i'll have a color issue. which is why I want to blend. im considering going the ppg route though now because of their base blender.

If you want good colour match get it by blending. Choose the closest variant and blend, use the dbc500 first then your colour. I've been a ppg rep and I can't remember a tech sheet saying use it after. Your correct, that dosn"t make sense. There are to many variables in today's material and they are senscative to air pressure, temperature etc. Blending is the only way to go.

thanks guys. I'm planning on going pg at this point. From what I've gathered here I'm going to fix the dent like normal and prime the small area. The scuff the rest of the quarter and apply the dbc500 and a flaring base coat around the repair area. then I can mix in some of the dbc 500 into the paint to make it more tranparent and continue flaring the panel from there? after this i clear cut and buff :thumbup:

I'm sure you'll be fine, it sounds a lot harder than it is and with a bit of practice you'll do it in your sleep.
