Painting rally stripes
I have a black 66 mustang and I'd like to paint gold rally stripes on it. The black is a ppg basecoat clearcoat combo.
What's a good strategy in painting them on? Should I scuff up the area with a scotch bright pad, then tape out the stripes, then put 3 coats of gold on and a coat of clear? Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

There's a lot of ways to do this and everybody has a different one.
I think the absolute best way is to scuff the whole panel first. (I like 600 wet because it levels any peel in the panel, but a scuff pad will work too) then do your stripe and clear the entire panel. I'll sand after that to flatten then clear again so the stripe is buried and there's no ridge in the lines. That's a lot of work, but it comes out much better than just painting on top and pulling tape. It's just a question of how smooth you want it to be.
