painting for rat rod look
 

Hi There

Has anyone used SEM #39144 trim paint to paint the whole car to give it the flat black rat rod look . I am building a 38 ford sedan . Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated

The hot rod black look is out of style. Now they are painting them to look rusty. They use black on the edges and then paint them with red oxide primer and sand the edges to look like they were aged by the sun.

Blitz black, tractor supply sells the stuff. or a primer black with a seale. or a black with a de-glossing agent. lots of info here, do a search on the site.

the more runs and bad prepping the better for ratrods. kidding. The funnest car shows I've been at were ratrod shows. They know how to party. :D

Are you talking about doing the whole car in Sem rattle cans or using a spray gun? The rattle can method should work but expensive...The only other problem would be that Sem doesn't have a lot of UV protection in it and over time (maybe 3 to 5 years) it would oxidize, just like it does when used on moldings etc...it's not really made for overall use and especially top panels where the sun constantly hits the vehicle. For the proper UV protection you could use a black base coat with a satin clear over top, this way you have the look and the protection at the same time.

Flat black will never go out of style it depends on what u like..... you know the ol saying once you go black you never go back :thumbup::thumbup:

Industrial supply house and get a gallon of flat black and shoot that puppy..

The flat black paint jobs are just like any other fad, they go out of style when everybody does the same thing. They do it because it's cheap. Everyone knows a real paint job takes some work. The rusty look is also cheap, in a few years it will also go out of style.

Try Kirker paint. You can get in Matt or satin, I like the sain myself. By the way, have you heard the saying, chrome don't get you home.

Satin or Matte paint will be MUCH easier to keep looking good than flat!!
