Parts for GM Goodwrench shop air compressor model 5005
This is an upright shop compressor. 110v, 2hp, 7.4 CFM, 25 gallon.
The motor is almost dead on this compressor. It will pump to ~50psi then the motor stalls. I bought it from ORiellys Auto Parts ~3 years ago for ~$300 (1 yr warranty). The model 5005 is no longer availabe but a similar model 5006 is shown here. ORiellys has no repair parts available other than air filter and dipstick, and of course they have no clue about where to buy a motor for it. Anybody got any ideas where I can get a replacement motor? If it were a separated motor/compressor type I could order a suitable motor from somewhere like Grainger, but it's an integrated motor/compressor type, so the new motor options are going to have to be fairly specific to this application. As always, thanks for any help! Mike |

The sad fact is these things are "throw-away" designs and are rarely worth repairing so spending money on them is just throwing good money after bad as the old saying goes. Unless the repair turns out to be something really cheap you would be much better off applying that money toward the cost of a new belt drive compressor. Most likely the pump is trying to seize and the motor cannot spin it, is the motor getting unusually hot? Sorry about being so blunt but those things have a terrible reputation and even if you fix it you still don't have a reliable compressor, 3 years is more than most people get out of them.

go to harbor freight and pick up a good OILED compressor about that side, from now on, AVOID anything that says oilless.
This would be decent if you need something portable http://www.harborfreight.com/2-hp-29...sor-68127.html http://www.harborfreight.com/media/c...mage_13942.jpg |
Not portable but this one is even better!
http://www.harborfreight.com/35-hp-6...ssor-3848.html Those things go on sale very often for around $379 and that is a great deal on the US General which is A USA built compressor. As has been discussed here before the US General is actually a rebadged Belaire built in America using mostly American made parts (including the tank) with the pump itself being very good quality Italian built. Not everything is Chinese at HF these days! :) |
I had two of the "oil free" compressors blow up on me (literally) before I learned my lesson. Fortunately, both compressors were still under warranty so I didn't lose anything. I got my oil lubricated Sanborn compressor 5 years ago and it has worked perfectly ever since. I got mine at Menards, which is a home improvement store like Home Depot.
