What year did chevy utilize the passenger side dipstick? I'm not sure of the year of mfg of my engine and I want to be sure when I order one.

In 1975 they went to a fatter front lip on the timing cover, that is all I know off hand other than the rear main seal change in 1987.

In 1978 they started painting the engines blue and using a passenger side dip stick. If you get the # and date code off of the back of the block we can tell you what year it is.

My Camaro was built in December 1985 and had, 305, a one piece rear seal.

Hey speedy my 77 vette had a blue engine..why is that? It was a 19 thousand mile virgin so it was never tampered with.

Yeah I pulled a blue 350 target master out of a '78 caprice wagon. But there were a lot of "blue" engines. I had a '79 Cutlass with an original-blue 305 chevy. A lot of the late-70s through 80's SBC's were blue.

Blue painting of SBC's by the factory started in 1975, same year catalytic converters and HEI distributor started. Passenger side dipsticks started in 1981, one-piece rear main seal in late '85 as '86 models came out. Sometime in the mid 80's SBC switched to black paint.
