Pentium 4's and dual channel memory

I am looking into replacing the old trusty Athlon 700 here at home and have been looking at the dual channel memory available for the Pentium 4 chip to take advantage of the "hyper threading" technology. Basically I would need a Mobo with dual channel memory and a couple matching sticks of ram (in my case 512Mb each). This costs a significant amount extra and I was wondering if it is worth it?

I run a lot of the latest games (UT2003, Comanche 4, Simcity 4, Ravenshield etc.) and do a lot of photoshop work so if the increase in speed is substancial I would be willing to invest in the latest tech. I am also considering an ATA drive at the same time since all these new Mobo's that come with dual channel memory support this new standard.

Has anyone tried this new hardware and have a comment pro or con? Is it worth mixing old tech (EIDE) with the new tech or does the advantage go out the window? I've read the tests and to be honest they mean nothing in the real world, I want an experienced opinion.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, replace "Mobo" with the word "motherboard". Does that make more sense?

i'm not a computer nerd and i knew what a mobo was......

FastCHevy, you need a usb port. they make a hub type thing that plugs into the port in the back, sits on your desk, and has multiple usb ports available.

hey 4Jaw, how much you want for the old 700???
that would be a big step up for me, as i'm still running a 466!!!

Now thats what I'm talkin bout Troy! That should be one heck of a screamer. I already have a 9000 Radeon that works fine for the games I am running but I wouldn't mind stepping up, it's only 4X AGP and from what I am seeing for sale thats old tech already!

I'm torn between spending a few more bucks and building a similar system or just staying midstream and save the money, some pretty good deals for around a grand up here. The line seems to be drawn between the old motherboards supporting single channel and the new stuff at the bleeding edge. I do like the Hyper Thread idea, and from what I have read it really comes in handy for a lot of the work I do on the PC. The dual channel memory thing I am not so sure about.

One thing is for sure, I am sick and tired of listening to all the fans running in this thing, there is absolutely no need for there to be three fans in one computer. This overclocker case design using fans is ridiculous. What the heck ever happened to the silent PC? I miss my old Pentium 75 laptop, not a single fan in it.

Kept your lap warm though!

I afraid the little ones have first dibs Larry, Luke is already a whiz and plays GTA3 better than myself. I guess one day I will have to explain why picking up ladies in the car and taking them to the park gives him 5 more health points. I am an evil father to expose my children to such violence.

Pray for my soul.

Yeh, I could have built something for a few hundred less that would do every thing I want to do, and be compatible with anything new for the next few years. Going this route I know that I'm on top of the latest technology, and will have plenty in reserve.
Some of the capabilities of this MB are assume. And there is some that will do even more than this one.

I'ts kinda like my cars I tend to go beyond what is necessary.
Some of the features of this system I do not understand yet, and may never use them. But they will be there if I want to.

There is some people on here that can explain what all of this new stuff is. Gen3_with_455, 68 Imp, Native Gearhead and Jag. to name a few, They helped me a lot.

A year ago, the only computer I knew was the work order Invoice computer at the shop and store. Now I know how to turn on a PC. eh.

PS. If you see the Dejoys and the Nickles at the show there this year tell them hello for me.

That's pretty good Poncho, how many fingers. I'm up to 3 now. Index and middle on the left hand and the middle finger on the right hand.
