Many of those IRS are the 8.8 ring gear as I recall.

We used the IRS in a mid engine sand rail back in 1998... a SB-Chevy with a powerglide hooked to the differential yoke with only the u-joint and slip yoke into the PG.
Some people are like Slinkies... Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
