Just my two cents, but i would like to know what is the motor goin in and wht are your plans. I have a very very fun peepy 305 with less than 1000bucks worth of parts, and last i checked it was making 230tq and 240 hp. Using edelbrock brocks performer cam with matching lifters, 601 heads, performer intake, headers, double roller timing chain, msd ignition, nice tune up with 700r4 tranny and 3 42 gears. Not a drag monster but lots of fun on the street and cruise right at 2000 rpm doing 70 on highway. Dont expect much unless your supercharging it.

I have no plans for it yet, my main goal was just to learn how to build an engine and get it running

What you are doing is a good way to learn.
The fact that you are curious and don't mind getting in there and getting dirty says a lot.
Rome wasn't built in a day.

It's not all about cubic inches, it's about airflow. Larger bores allow larger valves which allow more airflow (at which point the port design of the heads become a limiting factor). RPM plays a role as well.

The DZ302 is pretty lame down low but is cookin with gas (for real) when she's wound up. Of course, that's a big bore, short stroke engine. The 305 was pretty much an emissions/economy mill.

In the end, make sure you have fun with it. If you're still short on power, I'd find a budget friendly nitrous system (I'd be conservative with it for reliability), and try that.

Now all you need is the Supercharger.
