Pete jackson gear drives problem

I have a 350 small block with a pete jackson gear drive. i just bought this motor from a friend who built it a couple of years ago, but it has not run till now.It seems to run fine in idle and low rpm. when you start to give it some juice in the high rpm, all at once a high pitch scream with come from the chain casing area. it doesn't happen all the time though. It doesn't sound good. does anyone know what this problem is????? Thanks if you respond to this question.

sounds like the idler gear is chattering at whatever rpm you are turning it havent had a ton of experience with that system but im pretty sure you can buy the gears in under or oversize depending on clearances and whether it has been line bored or not , not sure but it may need oil spray or grooved thrust washers. hope that helps somewhat

Unless he got a "quiet" version, gear drives are very noisey...obnoxiously loud whine. Even the quiet versions are still noisey. I would take a high quality timing chain any day over a gear drive. They can be so loud as to be offensive (IMO). Some people like that whine, thinks it makes their car sound like it has a supercharger

"I would take a high quality timing chain any day over a gear drive."

I agree... I've never seen any use for a gear drive. They are loud, transmit a lot more crank vibration to the valve train and when they have problems they like to throw huge amounts of tiny metal pieces onto the engine.

IMO they do nothing better than a good quality chain and do a lot of things worse. If it were my engine I'd pull it out and replace it with a chain... fast. Especially if it's sounding weird.

I agree w/you guys. Try starting that up at 6 or so in the morning going to a show. A great way to lose friendly neighbors. ....My bud had to push his out on the street before he could start it.

Nah, most people who run a gear drive can barely hear them over the open headers Their neighbors moved away long ago!

Really? How much power did you gain in the swap?

I have only read about losses in power. On a street engine these loses are almost too small to measure, but on 1000+ horse mountain motors there is a considerable loss in power with a gear drive.

I have a noisy PJ gear set. Love it, but I have a couple issues to iron out. The peg thats supposed to ride the timing cover has in 50 minutes of run time wore a decent depth into the cover. I have to get in contact with the PJ techies and see whats up.
