Hey guys my name is John and I'm new to the forum. I have always had a passion for custom upholstery, but never got off my *** and done anything about it. Well, I've decided to get off my ***, better late than never! So I'm trying to decide which machine to get. I have a guy here in Tulsa who runs a trim shop and he's shutting down half of it and has two machines for sale, pfaff 145 and 545. He wants 1200 a piece for them, this seems a little high to me, but I'm a newbie. Although hes kind of a friend and has offered to let me come hang out at his shop and teach me how to do seat covers, that's worth a little extra to me. But, still don't wanna get completely bent over:) So first question is, is 1200 too much? Second question, should I get the 145 or the 545? Thanks for your help!!

Hi John. Welcome to Hotrodders.com. I assume they come with tables and motors. Do they have clutch motors or servo motors driving them? 145, 545, and 1245 are all basically the same. The smaller the number, the older the machine. I learned on a Pfaff 1245, and they still make that model. An older 1245 will go for $1200 from a dealer who has it in good working order. That's too much for the 145 or 545, unless a lot of stuff (like extra feet) comes with them. Pfaff makes excellent machines, and they are worth more than the Singers and Consews of the world.

Buying the machine from someone who is willing to teach you the terminology and show you technique and tricks is worth a bunch over getting a cheap price from somewhere..
