Phantom taillights?

For my first thread here on Hotrodders, I would like to know if anyone can tell me how (or provide a link) to install those taillights that look like they are flush to the sheet metal, clear coated over, and are almost invisible when they are not lit.

Thanks,
Jerry

flush mounted taillite are pretty straight foward to install but mabee you need a clear lens cover tinted with a candy thats close to the color of the car to make them look invisible..I'm just guessing though...

I was thinking about doing this years ago and I just figured I would be shooting candy red over them. With the silver background of a tail lamp bucket it MAY look pretty similar to a silver base/red candy paint job. I was even planning on moulding them in. This was on a glass fender. I was going to litterally bond the lense to the back side of the fender with the hole and the lense beveled so the top surface would be flush. Then literally mould the seam in with Everglass and mask off a surface of the lense and prime the fender. Sand the edge smooth and move it in a little so you know you will only have the coat or two of silver at the edge, base it then remove the tape and candy it. I am thinking that would work pretty well but I never even made a test so I don't know.

Saw a showcar once that had molded in tail lights. The builder never thought about having to remove/replace the bulb. Apparently (I wasnt able to see behind the upholstered trunk) the bucket was semi covered and made any kind of elec. socket work nearly impossible.

There was a product on the market used to 'smoke' lenses. It was basically candy black in a can. very very light even coats and it looks nice, if thats your look. I imagine similar results are possible with any color, especially with todays LED taillights being so much brighter

I have installed the third brakelight kits of this sort.

They have a thick clear lens. You cut the hole for a tight fit, with the clear lens sticking through.

Once installed you sand the lens down to the shape of the body.... mask over it for opaque colors, then unmask for the final clear.
