Post Photo Album Project

I know a lot of people have expressed a desire to help out around here.

I have a cool project that I don't have the time to start or complete. I think I am going to have to put it on the back burner indefinitely, but I thought I would see if Hotrodders members wanted to take it under their wing first. It requires no particular computer knowledge beyond what is needed for posting on the board. Here are the details:

I would like to start a new photo album just for photos from recent shows.

Here's what I've come up with so far:

We watch the car show calendars at Hemmings.com and other sites, and the Upcoming Shows forum in here, so we know which shows are happening when.

A week or two before each show, we contact whomever is running the show -- local club, promoter, etc, by email or by phone. We tell them that we will publish numerous photos from their car show on Hotrodders.com. All they'll need to do is get us the pics, and we'll do everything else. They can email us pics, or send them by mail, and we'll get them scanned in, or otherwise converted to digital format. Then, we put the pics up in a new photo album just for rod shows. Every week in the newsletter, we'll have a link to new show pics.

I see 4 basic steps so far:

1. Get the contact information for each show. Check the online and offline car show calendars, and get the email or phone contact info for each show.

2. Obtain the pics. Email or phone the contacts prior to the show, and request that pics from their show be sent by email, or by regular mail. We might also need to contact them again after the show as a reminder, and after we get their pics up, to thank them.

3. Convert the pics. If they were photographs sent in by mail, we'll need to scan them in so that they are in digital format. We'll need someone with access to a decent scanner for this one.

4. Upload the pics to the site. I'm thinking we'll just start up another photo album, but this one will be only for shows. Instead of all the albums being usernames, they'll be names of recent shows.

We can have one set of people do steps 1 and 2.
And another set of people for steps 3 and 4.

We can also ask hotrodders to send in pics that they took at shows.

Unfortunately, we can't pay anyone. Everyone here works for free. The only thing we can offer is a chance to affect the hotrodding world in a positive, unique way, and an opportunity to try something that has never been done before.

If you're interested in being a part of this project, please contact me by PM, or by email at jon@hotrodders.com .

If you have any ideas as to how we could best accomplish this, let's discuss them in this thread.

Be a good job for the Pup. He can show off his computer skills plus it will keep him occupied. Maybe he could work off his PeeWee profile. Just a suggestion.

Maybe people on the board could take pics of the shows they attend also. I go to shows regular in about 3 counties. Id gladly snap pics and post em. HG

Jon;

Would there be a limit of pics posted per show? Would this album include car cruises, as well? The reason I ask, is, some shows have hundreds of postworthy entries(ie Autorama), and Woodward Dream Cruise had 50,000 rods, and 1.5M ppl, last year.

There would be no limit to how may pics we could post. We would only be limited by the manpower and/or womanpower. We can automate much of the process by writing boilerplate emails to send to the show contacts, and just filling in the blanks. Like this:

"Dear [insert contact name here],

My name is [insert your name here], from Hotrodders.com. I'm contacting you because we saw you had your [insert show name here] car show coming up on [insert show date here]. We'd like to put photos from your show in our new Hotrodders Rod Show Photo Album. This is a free service..."

The most skill required would be by the person or people who scan in the photos, which is a fairly easy task anyway, just a bit tedious. Everything else is mostly just sending out these boilerplate emails, and keeping organized. Minimal computer skills required.

We could definitely use pics that members took. I could just set up a new album with the name of the show, and you could upload all of the pics you took to that album.

Jon;

Would this be an appropriate spot for pictures of old legend cars from, say, pre1970, like the Mysterion, the Red Barron, Garlitts' Dragster, Barris' cars, the original Beach Boys Deuce Coupe, etc. Or maybe this would turn into a rats nest, with ppl posting Uncle Joe's old moonshine runner or litte Billy's minibike. I think a spot for legend cars might be nice, but it's a matter of taste, and might need regulation, to keep mischief makers out . "The Hall of Fame" might be appropriate, if that type of album is appropriate at all.

U may want to consider some type of restriction in the show album, to keep the LS1 types from posting ricers, porn, and derogatory graphics. U don't want this to become anti-rice.com (not that there's anything wrong with them). Just my $.02.

Terry.

HEY JON: I live in Indianapolis and have a 1938 Lafayette street rod. I attend most Goodguy and NSRA big weekend shows in about a 500 mile radius. If you wanted pictures I could supply you almost a roll per week of this type of show cars and general interest people shots. Let me know your interest!! GOOD IDEA. DAVE

Dave E Shank, HemmiGremmie -- definitely! Maybe we can get a decent amount of pics without even having to organize Operation Email Every Rodding Club In The World.

Ultimately, we'll need them in digital format though. Are you guys both taking pics with digital cameras?

As for kitkar's question -- we should probably keep it targeted just for shows. Down the line, we might want to include those other pics. Also, the show albums will not be open to any board member like the photo album we have now is. If someone has pics from a show, I'll add their bulletin board password to the allowed list for the new album so that they can upload them.

I can probably do some damage at the March Meet, Good Guys October Nostalgia Finals at Bakersfield, October NHRA Hot Rod Reunion and the West Coast NSRA Street Rod Nationals.

Incidentally Jon this can get REAL big REAL quick. How much space do you have for a photo album?

Awesome. It warms my cold black heart to see everyone willing to pitch in on this project .

I will start setting up the new album, and I will plug this in the newsletter today. I am not going to set a specific date that it will be up, because I have been getting myself in trouble by doing that lately. I still need to organize the Knowledge Base editors (whose patience is greatly appreciated!).

willys -- counting the entire website, not just the board, we are currently using about 10% of our server space. I think this project will snowball too, and those pics do take up a lot of space. When we outgrow our space, adding more space is fairly inexpensive. The biggest expense will be the increase in bandwidth, but we will deal with it somehow.

Sounds like a super idea.
I would be more than willing to do pics from "Back to 50's" @ St Paul, "Hearland Nationals" in Des Moines and of course my favorite "Bonneville Speed Week" as we run a coupe on the salt, plus any other shows I might attend.
