picking up a new engine today have some simple ?s
 
After not being able to track down my masive oil leak and ive given up on that tired 307 im going to be picking up a complete pan to throttle body 96 vortec 350 with about 75k on it from a buddy for 400. i know i need a flywheel and intake for it. but my queston is what cam should i run i just bought a thumper cam from comp because i wanted that rough idle.

my specs for my 79 malibu are as follows

18x10.5 rear wheel with a 265/45/r18 tire

NV3500 5 speed with the 1st:3.49 2nd:2.16 3rd:1.40 4th:1.0 5th:.73

I have a 9" that i will be installing with 3.37 gears that i will be installing

2.5" dual exhaust no cats and 40 series flowmaster

I have 14" wilwood rotors with 4 piston calibers up front and 12"rotors with 4 piston calibers in the rear. i used the factory booster and a aftermarket master cylinder. (can run a vac pump if needed)

i dont drive this car often mostly just to car shows looking for lots of sound dont care about power much

The small thumpr cam works well in carb engines but not sure if its going to be happy in a efi car. But comp does sell a cam for efi vortec that will make some good power.

You can use some cams in the efi vortecs but make sure it can be tuned to support the cam. Its almost certainly not going to be happy with a thumpr but i have seen them in a gto it had a few issues but was drivable as long as it was warmed up.

Thumpr Will be just fine if going to carbed setup.

im going to be running carb but i bought a thumper cam for my old motor and never put it in its for flat tappet so i thought i cant use it because the newer gm motors have roller cams. i paid 153 for it from speed way and was looking for something in that price range so i can exchange it.

Well if its oe roller you can just buy a cam and use the factory lifters. Cost is much cheaper but probably more than flat cam.

I would go roller for sure a lot of people love the lt4 hot cam and the other hot gm cam that works well with fuel infection or carb.

you can get a small roller cam with a lumpy idle.If sound is important,,,,
consider 3 inch exhaust with X pipe for the same reason.

My car sounds great as it is i just want a cam that will give me the lobe at idle. just looking for some specs on a cam or a good part number that will work with the vortec heads and give me a nasty idle. as i really only drive my car on a trailer and off a trailer and a cruse once in a while.

If you are looking for a cheap sound and dont care about power,buy a thumper/voodoo,w/e.
If you want power.buy either a low lift roller hydraulic with a tight LDA,or a oval,short track limited lift race cam.
