Well, after much research I've finally found a pickup that matches what Im looking for except for one thing...it's white. Thats not going to stop me from considering it though. It's got everything Im looking for extended cab, 3/4 ton, five speed, 4x4 with the 6.0L.
The truck has 84,000 miles and they are asking $15,750.
I'm new to buying vehicles from dealers and I've never bought anything for more than $2500 before. What would be a good offer for a truck like this?
Also, it's in Kellogg, Idaho and I liver over 400 miles away in Western Washington (about 1 1/2 hours southwest of Seattle). Air fare is cheap but if I fly over there they are going to know I'll most likely be driving home in it so I dont think they'd be as willing to negotiate a price, and it seems to me it would be difficult to negotiate something thats pretty much sight unseen.
Does anybody know how the sales tax thing would work out? Would I end up paying both Idaho and Washington sales tax?
I don't know the law in either of the states state but logically speaking I would think the only way to avoid paying taxes in both states would be to go to a dealer in your area and make the deal there. The two dealers can make an internal dealer transfer of the vehicle and it would be shipped to your locality.
in some cases its paid to the state you bought it in
in some cases its the state you register it in
if you pay it in the state you bought it from, you provide proof to the state you register it in that its already been paid, and they cant make you pay it a second time
just like if you buy a pack of ciggs or shirt while your out of state, you dont have to pay it a second time when u get home
I have moved around a lot before retiring and have purchased several vehicles out of the state I was residing in. I paid the sales tax rate in all the states in which I registered the vehicle. A phone call you your state vehicle registration office should answer that question for you. The $15,000 price tag sounds a bit high to me. Why don't you go to autotrader.com and do a search for the same truck within 500 miles of your location and you will get a feel for the asking price for the vehicle and go from there. If you decided to fly down to look at the truck, the seller does not need to know how you got there and a rental car may escape his eagle eye.
Are they a reason you want to buy from a dealership? If not you can and will get a better deal from an individual. I would suggest taking it to a repair shop for a used car inspection,(either individual or dealership) if the seller is not willing to let you get it inspected, I would run from that deal. Autotrader.com works very well.
Good luck. BTW it is a nice looking truck
This particular dealer sells in very large volumes all over the Northwest and it is not uncommon for them to make sales in cases like this. If it were any other dealer I'd be a bit more hesitant. But I have talked to others who have bought both new and used vehicles from them in the past and they seem to be pretty satisfied.
From what I have found, the vehicle seems to be fairly in line with a lot of the other pickups on the market. When I search autotrader.com for manual trans equipped pickups I get less than 10 that show up, there are more than 150 auto equipped pickups within 300 miles. The manual trans pickups that do show up are either 4.8L 1/2 tons, regular cabs, previous generation 3/4 tons or 1 tons. None of which I am interested in. The pickup is priced $750 or so higher than average retail values I have found from NADA, Edmunds, and Kelley Blue Book. So, if I were to make an offer...what would you all feel would be a reasonable offer?
I'd settle for an auto but I really want a manual and this particular one has pretty much everything Im looking for.
That price sounds kinda high to me also,, I bought a 2000 chev silverado 1 ton duelly, lowered ,454, leather, hard tanno cover, billet wheels with 61 K miles on it last year for 16500, in Washington state,, i didn't have to pay any taxes because I live in Oregon and we don't have any sales taxes,, but huge property taxes,,
Well, it's gonna be $14,950 and I only pay taxes for the county it's going to be registered in. I called the credit union that I'll finance it through and the NADA retail value they pulled up was $15,235.
The reasons why I like this truck:
3/4 ton
6.0L
Five speed
4.10 gears and rear limited slip
Extended cab
4x4
Floating axles
Everything I was looking for in a pickup.
