Pickup truck - Under bed compartments?

I was toying with the idea of making a trunk like compartment under the bed of my '87 SWB Chevy like the Honda Ridgeline. This would go where the spare tire used to be and have a hinged lid using the bed floor where it was cut out with a recessed latch or something.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Years back....Ford for a year or two put a small tool box under the bed...it was accessed by a door on the outside of the truck bed. Anything and everything that was ever put in one of those got wet and rusted, finally the boxes ruted. You could not keep mud and water etc. out of them. I guess thats why ford quit having them.

I remember those. I was thinking of a lift up hatch through the floor though. The box will have a tonneau cover to keep the weather out of the box to begin with..
